Actually religion makes up a large proportion of charitable causes, outreach programs, soup kitchens, and foreign aid. I don't know any churches who HAVEN'T donated towards Haiti or even sent over members to assist in aiding the country. I can't comment on Islam because the research proving this was done on Christian churches.

Actually the demand for cathedrals and other large buildings to honor god have spurred significant architectural advances. What about Michelangelo? What about the Sistene chapel? Darwin himself majored in theology, that didn't seem to hamper his brilliant scientific work. Leonardo Da Vinci was deeply religious, did that stop him from making remarkable diagrams of the human anatomy, and incredible engineering diagrams of devices yet to be invented for centuries? Not Really.
